The 5Rs: Our Core Values

At Harbor City International School, our community is guided by a shared set of values that shape how we learn, grow, and interact with one another. These principles, known as the 5Rs, are the foundation of our school culture. They represent the traits we strive to develop in our students, the standards we uphold as educators, and the commitments we make as a school community. These values are not just expectations- they are lived every day through our actions, relationships, and academic pursuits.

Respect
HCIS students, parents, and staff demonstrate respect for themselves and others, for individuality, and for the environment- both within the school and beyond. Respect is reflected in open, honest, and direct communication, and in the use of language that is thoughtful and non-offensive.

Responsibility
Responsibility in the HCIS community is seen through active citizenship, professionalism, appropriateness in dress and language, and timeliness. Responsibility creates the opportunity for earned freedom. Students and staff serve as advocates for one another and for the greater community.

Relationship
HCIS relationships are built on care, compassion, support, acceptance, and patience. By practicing empathy, our community works to build new relationships and strengthen existing ones.

Reach
The academic program at HCIS is individualized, authentic, challenging, student centered, current, and inquiry based. Students and staff are lifelong learners in an environment where curiosity is encouraged, expectations are high, and work is done with integrity. Together, we consistently strive for excellence.

Resilience
At HCIS, we value the ability to persevere and recover from setbacks. Resilience is a character trait we recognize, nurture, and celebrate. Our community supports the development of grit and the courage to face challenges with determination and strength.
