Meet Mitchell Gleason, our new Social Studies Teacher and College & Career Readiness Advisor. With a master's degree in history earned at just 22 years old and a genuine passion for small school communities, Mitchell is ready to help our 7th-12th graders explore where we've been and plan where they're going. We sat down with him to learn what brought him to Harbor City and what he's most excited about in his new role.
What’s one skill you have that might surprise us?
I am skilled at travel research and planning!
What drew you to HCIS?
I like small schools and the fact that I can dedicate more time to my students' needs and interests. Each time I come to HCIS, everyone is so helpful and supportive and students are having fun and enjoying it.
If you could design your own HCIS symposium week, what would students be exploring with you?
We would explore unknown or quiet spots in Duluth; perhaps trails or other outdoor spaces that many people (even in Duluth) have not visited before.
What's your favorite room of HCIS?
I love the Zen Dens (both of them). It is so nice to have a designated space for our students to calm down and relax when they need a break. I also love the theater and when I got to see students participate in Improv over the summer.
Tell us a little bit about your life outside of HCIS!
I am originally from Chisholm, MN and received my bachelor's degrees in social studies education and general history from UMD (class of 2023). I received my Master's degree in history this summer at just the age of 22. When I am not a part of HCIS, I love to spend time with my family, go for walks outdoors, travel, and compete in trivia competitions.
